Timothy De Thaey On Tomb Raider

When did you first become interested in Lara and the Tomb raider Series?

When I was 6 years old (1996), my family went to visit my uncle and back then he had bought a Playstation. It was the first time I ever saw an actual Playstation in action, and of course the first time I saw Lara Croft in action! He had bought, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (the first game in the series).  I remember it all well… he started his console and I immediately loved the original Theme Song. The first time I saw Lara in action was the infamous swimming-part in the 2nd level called: “City of Vilcabamba”. I was soon compelled with this game, even though it used to scare me at times. It had excitement and I loved it!

What’s your favourite game from the series and why?

I think I’d have to make a choice between a few games here (TR1, 2, TRL)… Where TR1 and 2 had a rich and long storyline, TRL has amazing graphics.  But from all the games I’d say TR1 is definitely my most special one, simply because it was the first time I was introduced with Lara and her adventures.

What does Lara Croft mean to you?

To me, I think, she’s one of the most compelling characters of all times. I’ve never loved another fiction-character more then Lara Croft. To me she’s everything: Sexy, intelligent, polite, sophisticated, adventurous, … etc. There are probably other characters out there who would share some of the same values but Lara Croft has the right combinations of every value and… she’s just the right thing!

In each game, Lara has run into a new enemy, which enemy has been your favourite so far and why?

Again, the villain from the first game: “Miss Jacqueline Natla”.  She was basically a character with the right values too. The right values to be a perfect villain. Of course there are many types of villains but the ‘Undercover-Mutant-ruthless-business-woman’ was just the right type of guy… (umm, girl!) for Tomb Raider. But of course many other were great characters too and it was pleasing to see different types of villains for every new game. Keeps things new!

What do you think the future holds for the Tomb Raider series?

It is with great grief that I must say that the future of the concept ‘Tomb Raider’ is uncertain. There was a time when I knew Lara was going to become much greater and better. But now it could be that her time has already come and many heroes (and heroines ^^) have a time where they lose their famous flame and will always be remembered in history books and worshiped by dedicated, perhaps overly obsessed fans (… ummm, referring to Planet Lara Interactive? ^^)

I certainly don’t hope so! But all I can wish for is that she will be in the right hands for a very long time and that she may live on and let us experience great things!
